What is computer-guided dental implant surgery?

Computer-guided implant surgery, introduced in 1999, is a procedure that has significantly improved the precision and predictability in the replacement of teeth with dental implants.

It starts with a Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan of your mouth areas that you’re considering having dental implants. Using specialized 3D imaging software, the dentist can then visualize the placement of dental implants in three dimensions –  conducting a virtual surgery before ever touching your mouth. This eliminates the guesswork involved in determining what parts of the jawbone offer the best sites for dental implant placement.

Next, a surgical guide or template (which resembles a nightguard or athletic mouthguard) is made and positioned in your mouth. The openings in this template form precise guides for the placement of the implants — accurate in terms of position, width and depth.

This technique has revolutionized the industry and provides a more accurate and safer positioning of dental implants, giving your permanent teeth in hours, not months.

Computer-guided dental implant surgery offers greater precision and predictability when replacing teeth with dental implants.

BioHorizons Guided Dental Implants

BioHorizons guided dental implants, used in the TeethXpress procedure, offer the highest level of precision and predictability to ensure optimal implant placement. And it’s why we use it a Naperville Dental Specialists. Here’s how it works:

1 Develop a personalized treatment plan

When you meet with your implant clinician, you’ll review the diagnosis and treatment plan for guided surgery.

2 Make a CT scan appliance

We’ll fabricate a CT scan appliance with radiopaque teeth to allow the clinician to determine optimal implant placement for ideal prosthetic design.

3 Take a CT scan

We’ll take a CT scan with the CT scan appliance from step 2 properly placed in your mouth.

4 Plan procedure using 3D imaging software

When you meet with your implant clinician, you’ll review the diagnosis and treatment plan for guided surgery.

5 Make the surgical guide

We’ll physically make the surgical guide using BioHorizons’ virtual treatment plan.

6 Conduct surgery with BioHorizons guided surgery kit

Your implant clinician will perform the procedure using the surgical guide and the BioHorizons guided surgery kit.

The implant surgery itself is typically performed under local anesthesia, and often requires no sutures (stitches).

Since so many of the details have been accomplished in the planning stages, computer-guided implant surgery is typically uneventful for you, the patient. It can result in shorter time in the chair, less discomfort during recovery — and a highly pleasing result.
